EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
THROUGH THE LITURGICAL YEAR (# 25)
A Weekly Pastoral Tool for the YEAR OF THE EUCHARIST
Pentecost, Year A
May 15-21, 2005
“Receive the Holy Spirit”
(+) In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
(A moment of silence)
SONG: Any suitable Eucharistic hymn or an invocation to the Holy Spirit may be sung.
WORDS OF ODO CASEL
Today we celebrate the glorious ending of the great festal season and at the same time its richest unfolding, a sacred mystery in itself … We celebrate the completion of the work of our redemption: God as gift, the wonderful messianic gift from above. The Spirit is the gift of God and of Christ to the Church, through which it becomes the bride of Christ and reigns with the Holy Trinity. And all this is the result of the cross.
The more we let the Spirit guide us, the greater the power of God’s eternal life to grow in us and the nearer we draw to full possession of the Holy Spirit, whom we already see in our risen and glorified Lord Jesus Christ.
SILENT ADORATION AND PRAYER
OPENING PRAYER
Leader: Let us pray in the Spirit who dwells within us.
(Silent prayer)
Father of light,
from whom every good gift comes,
send your Spirit into our lives
with the power of a mighty wind,
and by the flame of your wisdom
open the horizons of our mind.
Loosen our tongues to sing your praise
in words beyond the power of speech,
for without your Spirit
man could never raise his voice in words of peace
or announce the truth that Jesus is Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.
Assembly: Amen.

JESUS MASTER TRUTH
Listening to the Word
GOSPEL READING: Jn 20:19-23
PERSONAL REFLECTION
(As a tool for personal reflection, please visit the PDDM Website: www.pddm.org // www.pddm.us for BREAKING THE BREAD OF THE WORD [# 25]: A Lectio Divina Approach to the Sunday Liturgy. The Biblico-Liturgical Reflections are an aid for a deeper understanding of the Gospel reading.)
SONG: Any suitable hymn of praise or an invocation to the Holy Spirit may be sung.
Part II
JESUS MASTER WAY
Confrontation with the Word
POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART
Leader: Today, we celebrate the completion of the work of our redemption and the wonderful, messianic gift that resulted from the paschal event of Christ’s passion, death and resurrection. Filled with the Holy Spirit, the Easter gift, let us probe our hearts and see how receptive we are to the saving plan of God.
1. When the Risen Lord breathes upon us and says, “Receive the Holy Spirit”, what is our response? Are we receptive to the Holy Spirit, the Easter gift?
2. How does the Easter mandate, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you” affect us personally and influence our lives?
3. How do we make “little pentecosts” happen in our lives? Do we cooperate with the Holy Spirit in making the original Christian Pentecost a basic and lived reality in the here and now? Ho do we contribute to the missionary impetus of the Church?
PENITENTIAL PRAYER
(Cf. Rite of Penance)
Leader: Almighty and merciful God,
how wonderfully you created man
and still more wonderfully remade him.
You do not abandon the sinner
but seek him with a father’s love.
You sent your Son into the world
to destroy sin and death by his passion,
and to restore life and joy by his resurrection.
You sent the Holy Spirit into our hearts
to make us your children and heirs of your kingdom.
You constantly renew our spirit
in the sacraments of your redeeming love,
freeing us from the slavery to sin
and transforming us ever more closely
into the likeness of your beloved Son.
We thank you for the wonders of your mercy,
and with heart and hand and voice
we join the whole Church in a new song of praise:
Glory to you through Christ in the Holy Spirit,
now and forever.
Assembly: Amen.
SONG: Any suitable song may be sung.
Part III
JESUS LIFE
Acting upon the Word
PERSONAL PRAYER
CONTEMPLATING WITH MARY THE FACE OF CHRIST: The Mysteries of the Rosary may be prayed in part or in full.
THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION
Leader: My brothers and sisters, the light of the Holy Spirit irradiates us and his grace of love within us impels us to pray with confidence. And so we implore God and say to him:
(R.) LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER.
1. For the Church, that animated by the power of the Holy Spirit, it may continue to replicate in the here and now the marvels and wonders of the original Christian Pentecost. We pray: (R.)
2. For all peoples, cultures and nations of the earth, that they may be renewed and recreated by the transforming energy of the Holy Spirit, the Easter gift. We pray: (R.)
3. For those who have received the sacrament of Confirmation that, anointed by the Holy Spirit with astounding power for their ministry and mission in the world, they may be courageous witnesses of Christ, the Savior sent by the Father. We pray: (R.)
4. For the Holy Father’s General Intention for this month of May: FOR PEOPLE PERSECUTED FOR THE SAKE OF FAITH AND JUSTICE: May they find consolation and strength in the Holy Spirit. We pray: (R.)
5. For the Holy Father’s Mission Intention for this month of May: FOR THE PONTIFICAL MISSION SOCIETIES: May they help all Christians, young and old, realize that they have a part to play in missionary work. We pray: (R.)
(Other prayers may be added.)
THE LORD’S PRAYER
CONCLUDING PRAYER
Leader: God our Father,
let the Spirit you sent to your Church
to begin the teaching of the Gospel
continue to work in the world
through the hearts of all who believe.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.
Assembly: Amen.
FINAL SONG: Any suitable Eucharistic hymn or song of praise may be sung.
