INTRODUCTION

(Cf. Eugene Maly, The Word Alive, Alba House: New York, 1982, p. 107)

What is the source of this hope? How, in the face of crises, frustrations and disappointments can it have such power? The reason is an equally strong faith in the past,a belief in what God has already done to prove his love. The reasoning is that, if he has done so much already, how much more must he have in store for us! Thus, in Advent hope and faith are expressed equally; we can hope because we believe.

SILENT ADORATION

OPENING PRAYER

Leader: All-powerful God,

increase our strength of will for doing good

that Christ may find an eager welcome at his coming

and call us to his side in the kingdom of heaven,

where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, forever and ever.

Assembly: Amen.

Part II

JESUS MASTER WAY

Confrontation with the Word

POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART

Leader: We open our hearts to listen to the promptings of the living Word. Let us ask ourselves with limpid honesty:

1.      What are the feelings, sentiments and realizations that well up from deep within as we begin the new liturgical year? How do we come to grips with the quality of “newness” that comes to us from the Lord in this hope-filled history of ours?

2.      In the Advent expectation that prepares the Church for Christ’s definitive coming at the end-time and his various comings in daily life, what is the source of our hope? How, in the face of crises, frustrations and disappointments can our hope have an intense power?

3.      Is our waiting for the Lord’s coming free from despair-filled tension? Do we live by faith, walk in hope, and are renewed in love so that in our final encounter with the Lord Jesus we come to him as faithful servant and intimate friend?

PRAYER

Leader: Lord, you come to visit your people in peace: Lord, have mercy.

Assembly: Lord, have mercy.

Leader: Christ, you came to save those who are lost: Christ have mercy.

Assembly: Christ, have mercy.

Leader: Lord, you come to build a new world: Lord, have mercy.

Assembly: Lord, have mercy.

SONG: Any suitable song may be sung.

Part III

JESUS LIFE

Acting upon the Word

PERSONAL PRAYER

CONTEMPLATING WITH MARY THE FACE OF CHRIST: The Mysteries of Light of the Rosary may be prayed in part or in full.

THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION

Leader: Let us pray to God who cares for all, and with earnest humility say:

(R.) OH, THAT YOU WOULD REND THE HEAVENS AND COME DOWN!

1.      That through the new liturgical year, God’s gift of sacred time, we may become more immersed into the life of Christ.

2.      That our participation in the Advent liturgy may keep our hope alive in the coming of Christ and help us to be accountable for the eternal significance of each moment.

3.      That our Advent expectation may be marked by a spirit of preparedness and state of readiness in preparation for the end time.

4.      That our Christian hope be strengthened by our faith in what God has done already to prove his love.

5.      That as we await for the definitive coming of Jesus, we may live by faith, walk in hope and be renewed in love.

(Other prayers may be added.)

THE LORD’S PRAYER

CONCLUDING PRAYER

Leader: Father in heaven,

our hearts desire the warmth of your love

and our minds are searching for the light of your Word.

Increase our longing for Christ our Savior

and give us the strength to grow in love,

that the dawn of his coming

may find us rejoicing in his presence

and welcoming the light of his truth.

We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord.

Assembly: Amen.

FINAL SONG: Any suitable Eucharistic hymn or song of praise may be sung.
