WORDS OF EPIPHAMUS, CHURCH FATHER

“This is the day that the Lord has made: let us rejoice and be glad in it with a spiritual gladness pleasing to God. This is our greatest feast, one that is celebrated by the world, a feast of renewal and salvation … We too must be renewed today; we must renew a right spirit within our hearts and so prepare to enter into the mysteries of this new and perfect feast and to exult in this day’s heavenly joy.”

SILENT ADORATION

OPENING PRAYER

Leader: Let us pray

that the risen Christ will raise us up and renew our lives.

(Pause for silent prayer.)

God our Father,

by raising Christ your Son

you conquered the power of death

and opened for us the way to eternal life.

Let our celebration today

raise us up and renew our lives

by the Spirit that is within us.

Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God forever and ever.

Assembly: Amen.

Part II

JESUS MASTER WAY

Confrontation with the Word

POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART

Leader: We open our hearts to listen to the promptings of the living Word. Let us ask ourselves with limpid honesty:

A.    What impact does the event of Christ’s resurrection from the dead have on us? Are we truly an Easter people with “Alleluia” as our song?

B.     How are we “witnesses of Christ’s resurrection” in today’s world?

C.     Do we perceive the intimate presence of the Risen Christ in the Eucharist? Do we believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is an Easter event?

PRAYING WITH THE WORD

(Adapted from P. de la Tour, cf. Days of the Lord: The Liturgical Year, vol. 3, Collegeville: The Liturgical Press, 1993, p. 67)

Leader: Light of the world, O Jesus,

although we have never seen your open tomb,

whence comes this light among us:

this feast among feasts, if not from you, the risen one?

Assembly: Glory to you, O Risen Lord!

Leader: When someone we meet says to us:

where is your Christ today and his miracle?

We respond: whence comes the Spirit that turns us toward his Passover,

if not from him?

Assembly: Glory to you, O Risen Lord!

Leader: Our hearts burn when your love descends and whispers to us:

Love has come;

the day will come in the hearts of all creatures.

And the Lord will appear.

Assembly: Glory to you, O Risen Lord!

Leader: And if someone says to us:

Now show us a worthy sign beyond ourselves!

The sign is that at his return we must do what he loves

in order to testify that he is love.

Assembly: Glory to you, O Risen Lord!

Part III

JESUS LIFE

Acting upon the Word

PERSONAL PRAYER

CONTEMPLATING WITH MARY THE FACE OF CHRIST: The Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary may be prayed in part or in full.

THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION

Leader: On this great Easter feast, a feast of renewal and salvation: let us present our humble petitions to God the Father, who raised his Son Jesus from the dead, and implore with confidence.

(R.) LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER!

1.      That we may be deeply and inwardly renewed by this great feast of Easter: (R.)

2.      That we may discover the spiritual energy that the early disciples found in their faith encounter with Jesus risen from the dead:  (R.)

3.      That we may be joyful, credible witnesses of the Lord’s resurrection in today’s anguished world:  (R.)

4.      That we may respond fully to the Easter event that occurs in the Eucharist:  (R.)

5.      That the Spirit, the gift of the Risen Lord, animate us with power in our vocation as joyful Easter people, strongly convinced that “Alleluia” is our song:  (R.)

6.      That we may respond kindly to the migrants’ needs, both spiritual and humanitarian, while allowing for the integrity of the host nation:  (R.)

7.      That all forms of violence and oppression may cease and that the peace of the Risen Christ may give us the courage to be peaceful:  (R.)

8.      That we may treasure the abiding presence of the Risen Lord in our midst: (R.)

9.      That we may zealously and effectively extend the gift of Easter to the poor and needy, and to our family and friends:  (R.)

(Other prayers may be added.)

THE LORD’S PRAYER

CONCLUDING PRAYER

Leader: Father of love,

watch over your Church

and bring us to the glory of the resurrection

promised by this Easter sacrament.

We ask this through Christ our Lord,

who rose from the dead and is glorious,

now and forever.

Assembly: Amen.

FINAL SONG: Any suitable Eucharistic hymn or song of praise may be sung.
