WORDS OF MARTIN C. D’ARCY

(Cf. Meditation on the Sunday Gospels, Year B, ed. John Rotelle, NY: New York City Press, 1966, p. 56-57)

The disciples of Christ were changed from despair to unshakable joy by the events of Easter. Human beings differ in temperament … But all can come to happiness and acquire a disposition in which hope and courage have the upper hand … Such a disposition, however, to be secure and to give real peace must rest on a profound conviction of truth … It was a strange truth, which looked unblinkingly at shame and suffering and death. Those once abject apostles now preached what they felt might be to others a stumbling block or folly, of a God crucified and risen, a Lamb slain and alive. They created hope out of death.

SILENT ADORATION

OPENING PRAYER

Leader: Father,

by the love of your Spirit,

may we who have experienced

the grace of the Lord’s resurrection

rise to the newness of life in joy.

Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, forever and ever.

Assembly: Amen.

Part II

JESUS MASTER WAY

Confrontation with the Word

POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART

Leader: We open our hearts to listen to the promptings of the living Word. Let us ask ourselves with limpid honesty:

A.    How does the Easter proclamation of Peter to the crowd impinge on us? What meaning and challenge does it offer to us personally and as a community? What is our response to the Easter kerygma?

B.     Do we feel responsibility for the suffering and death that Christ endured? Do we recognize our part in the sin of a violent world where the just continue to be rejected and killed, as was Jesus, the Just Man?

C.     Are we always open and receptive to the beauty and healing power of Easter? Like Peter and the other apostles, are we credible witnesses of the paschal mystery of Christ and of the great love of God who vindicated and glorified him?

PRAYING WITH THE WORD

Leader: Loving Father,

you are the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob,

the God of our fathers,

and the God of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Your Servant-Son Jesus Christ was handed over to his death,

but you vindicated him by raising him to life.

The Holy and Righteous One is now for us

a font of love, mercy and forgiveness.

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, the author of life,

we pray for the healing of a sinful world

that is crippled by prejudice and injustice.

In the name of Jesus who leads us to eternal life,

we pray for those who suffer the pain of extreme poverty

and the violence of hatred and war

that they may experience your justice

and the bounty, peace and joy of the Easter mystery.

Almighty and merciful God,

may we always feel the saving power of the Risen Lord in our daily life

so that, filled with the energy of the Easter event,

we may go out into the world

and restore joy to a broken world,

in the name of Jesus,

who lives and reigns forever and ever.

Assembly: Amen.

Part III

JESUS LIFE

Acting upon the Word

PERSONAL PRAYER

CONTEMPLATING WITH MARY THE FACE OF CHRIST: The Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary may be prayed in part or in full.

THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION

Leader: On this great Easter feast, a feast of renewal and salvation. Let us present our humble petitions to God the Father, who raised his Son Jesus from the dead, and implore with confidence.

(R.) LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER!

1.      That our hearts may be filled with thanksgiving to God who has raised and glorified his Servant-Son Jesus, the Holy and Righteous One. We pray:  (R.)

2.      That we may be true witnesses of the Easter event in today’s anguished world. We pray:  (R.)

3.      That we may address the Easter appeal of repentance and conversion to those who have negated the love of God. We pray:  (R.)

4.      That we may be truly sorry for our offenses and endeavor to heal the brokenness of a secularized society that has turned away from God.  (R.)

5.      That through our acts of kindness and personal dedication we may touch and serve the poor, the sick, the brokenhearted, and the victims of violence and injustice. We pray:  (R.)

6.      That we may be eloquent signs of the Easter joy and the peace of the Risen Lord. We pray:  (R.)

7.      That we may proclaim the saving name of Jesus to all nations. We pray:  (R.)

(Other prayers may be added.)

THE LORD’S PRAYER

watch over those you have saved in Christ.

May we who are redeemed by his suffering and death

always rejoice in his resurrection,

for he is Lord forever and ever.

Assembly: Amen.
