WORDS OF THOMAS MORE

Let us deeply consider the love of our Savior Christ who so loved his own unto the end that for their sakes he willingly suffered that painful end, and therein declared the highest degree of love that can be. For, as he himself says: A greater love no one has than to give his life for his friends. This is indeed the greatest love that ever anyone had. But yet had our Savior a greater, for he gave his for both friend and foe …

Let us all in time, then, learn to love as we should, God above all things, and all other things for him …

Now, since our Lord has so loved us, for our salvation, let us diligently call for his grace that in return for his great love we may not be found ungrateful.

SILENT ADORATION

OPENING PRAYER

Leader: Lord,

we pray for your people who believe in you.

May they enjoy the gift of your love,

and spread it everywhere.

We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord.

Part II

JESUS MASTER WAY

Confrontation with the Word

POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART

Leader: We open our hearts to listen to the promptings of the living Word. Let us ask ourselves with limpid honesty:

A.    Do we allow ourselves to be permeated by the life-giving, but challenging words of Jesus: “This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you” (Jn 15:12-13)? How do we put into practice Jesus’ great command of love?

B.     What concrete lessons do we glean from Peter’s attitude, behavior and ministry towards the Gentile, Cornelius, and his household?

C.     Do we truly believe and acknowledge that the Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power? How do we share the universal love of God and his saving designs to peoples of all cultures and races?

PRAYER

(Adapted from Henri Nouwen’s Prayer, “Jesus, You fill All Our Deepest Desires”)

Leader: Your Father’s love was so unlimited

that he wanted us to know that love

and to find in it the fulfillment of our deepest desires.

So he sent us you,

with a human heart big enough to hold all human loneliness

and all human anguish.

Your heart is as wide and deep as divine love itself.

Your heart does not distinguish between rich and poor,

friend and enemy, female and male, slave and free, sinner and saint.

Your heart is open to receiving everyone with total unrestricted love.

For anyone who wants to come to you, there is room.

You want to draw all people to yourself,

and offer them a home where every human desire is met,

every human longing comes to rest

and every human need is satisfied.

But your heart is gentle and humble.

You do not force; you do not pull or push; you do not coerce.

You want us to come freely to your heart

and trust that we will find there the peace and joy we most desire.

You do not put any requirement on us;

you do not expect any great act of generosity;

you do not hope for heroic gestures or dramatic signs.

The first thing you want is trust.

You can only give your heart to those who come to it in trust.

Assembly: Help me today to give you that trust. Amen.

Part III

JESUS LIFE

Acting upon the Word

PERSONAL PRAYER

CONTEMPLATING WITH MARY THE FACE OF CHRIST: The Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary may be prayed in part or in full.

THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION

Leader: Christ, the true and living vine, calls us to abide in him and be fruitful. With faith and joy let us cry out to him, saying:

(R.) LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER.

1.      For the Holy Father’s General Intention for this month of May: FOR CHRISTIANS IN THE WORLD: Strengthened by the gifts of the Holy Spirit, may they build a world of peace and justice.  (R.)

2.      For the Holy Father’s Mission Intention for this month of May: FOR THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS IN MISSION COUNTRIES: May they adopt laws to protect human life from conception to its natural end. (R.)

3.      That we may truly cherish Christ’s revelation of sacrificial love: “No one has greater love than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (Jn 15:13). (R.)

4.      That our hearts be filled with Easter joy knowing that Christ is risen and living in the Church through his Holy Spirit. (R.)

5.      That the life-giving love of Jesus who laid down his life for us continue to energize today’s Christian disciples in preaching the good news of Easter to peoples of all nations, races and cultures.  (R.)

6.      That like the apostles Peter and Paul we may be docile instruments of the Holy Spirit in spreading God’s universal love to all.  (R.)

7.      That like the Roman centurion, Cornelius, and his household, peoples of all nations may follow the dictates of their conscience and follow what is pleasing to God, and be open to receive the saving love of Christ.  (R.)

(Other prayers may be added.)

THE LORD’S PRAYER

CONCLUDING PRAYER

Leader: Lord,

bless and strengthen your people.

May they remain faithful to you

and always rejoice in your mercy.

We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord.

Assembly: Amen.

FINAL SONG: Any suitable Eucharistic hymn or song of praise may be sung.
