WORDS OF GUERRIC OF IGNY

(Cf. Journey with the Fathers, ed. Edith Barnecut, OSB, New York: New City Press, 1993, p. 62-63)

Father, while I was with them I kept them in your name. This was the prayer our Lord made on the eve of his passion. But it would not be inappropriate to apply it to the day of ascension, when he was about to leave his disciples and entrust them to the Father. He who in heaven directs and governs the hosts of angels created by himself had chosen a small group of his disciples as his associates on earth. These he would instruct in person until the time when their hearts were sufficiently opened to be led by the Spirit. And so, great God that he was, Christ loved these little ones with a love worthy of his greatness.

SILENT ADORATION

OPENING PRAYER

Leader: God our Father,

your Servant-Son Jesus, having loved his own who were in the world,

he loved them to the end.

Keep us in his name and consecrate us in truth.

Give us the hope that the glory you have given him,

our Christ, the Risen Lord,

will be given to the Church his body.

He is Lord forever and ever.

Assembly: Amen.

Part II

JESUS MASTER WAY

Confrontation with the Word

POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART

Leader: We open our hearts to listen to the promptings of the living Word. Let us ask ourselves with limpid honesty:

A.    Do we allow ourselves to be strengthened by Christ’s Priestly Prayer? How do we contribute to making Christ’s intercession: “That they be one as we are one” a reality? Do we cherish Christ’s religious consecration so that we also may be consecrated in truth?

B.     Do we endeavor to make Christ’s Priestly Prayer our very own? Do we make an effort to use it to strengthen our spiritual and apostolic life? How do we contribute toward enhancing the apostolic character of our Christian vocation?

C.     Do we fully trust in the Lord God who knows the hearts of all? Do we allow God to work freely in the acts of discernment that we make day by day? Do we ask his guiding help in making decisions that will have an impact on our community and the people around us?

PRAYER

Leader: Holy Father, keep those you have given me true to your name, so that they may be one like us.

Assembly: Father, may they be one in us.

Leader: I gave them your word, and the world hated them, because they do not belong to the world.

Assembly: Father, protect them from the evil one.

Leader: Your word is truth. For their sake I consecrate myself so that they too may be consecrated in truth,

Assembly: Father, consecrate them in truth.

Part III

JESUS LIFE

Acting upon the Word

PERSONAL PRAYER

CONTEMPLATING WITH MARY THE FACE OF CHRIST: The Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary may be prayed in part or in full.

THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION

Leader: Christ, in his Priestly Prayer, prayed that we be kept from evil, be sanctified in truth, and be one in him. Let us ask him to look kindly on those redeemed by his blood, as we turn to him saying:

(R.) LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER.

1.      Send into the Church the Spirit of unity, to remove all dissension, hatred and division.  (R.)

2.      You freed those possessed by devils: free the world from the evils that afflict it.  (R.)

3.      You prayed, and were led by the Spirit to begin your ministry: may priests find in prayer the guidance of the Spirit to perform their duties.  (R.)

4.      You prayed that we may be one and be consecrated in truth: may we truly be one in your love and totally consecrated to the Father’s saving will.  (R.)

5.      May your Spirit guide all in authority to seek the common good.  (R.)

6.      Let our decisions and discernment be always inspired by you and the Holy Spirit who know the hearts of all.  (R.)

7.      You live in the glory of the Father: summon into your glory all the departed.  (R.)

(Other prayers may be added.)

THE LORD’S PRAYER

CONCLUDING PRAYER

Leader: God our Father,

in all the churches scattered throughout the world

you show forth the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.

Through the Gospel and the Eucharist

bring your people together in the Holy Spirit

and guide us in your love.

Make us a sign of your love for all people,

and help us to show forth

the living presence of Christ in the world,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, forever and ever.

Assembly: Amen.

FINAL SONG: Any suitable Eucharistic hymn or song of praise may be sung.
