WORDS OF ST. AUGUSTINE

I urge you in his name not to let your faith lie dormant in your hearts when you are buffeted by the winds and waves of this world. The Lord Christ’s power is by no means, nor is it asleep … A temptation arises: it is the wind. It disturbs you: it is the surging of the sea. This is the moment to awaken Christ and let him remind you of those words: Who can this be? Even the winds and the sea obey him. Who is this whom the sea obeys? It is he to whom the sea belongs, for he made it; all things were made through him … If, since we are only humans, the driving wind should stir up in us a tumult of emotions, let us not despair but awaken Christ, so that we may sail in quiet waters, and at last reach our heavenly homeland.

SILENT ADORATION

OPENING PRAYER

Leader: Father in heaven,

when your strength takes possession of us

we no longer say: Why are you cast down, my soul?

So now that the surging waves of our indignation have passed over us,

let us feel the healing calm of your forgiveness.

Inspire us to trust in you always

for you have power and dominion over all.

Help us to grasp your hand

when our lives are buffeted by turbulent storms.

You are our Master and Lord, now and forever.

Assembly: Amen.

Part III

JESUS MASTER WAY

Confrontation with the Word

POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART

Leader: We open our hearts to listen to the promptings of the living Word. Let us ask ourselves with limpid honesty:

A.    What are our experiences of despair and pain? How does it feel to be in the same situation as the raging Job, buffeted by life’s problems and troubled by storms from within? How do we respond to God’s assertion of his power and glory?

B.     Do we feel abandoned and neglected by Jesus when the life-storms are violent and he seems to be “sleeping”? Why do we panic?

C.     Do we believe in faith that God is in control? Do we place our trust in Jesus whom even the wind and sea obey? Do we derive strength from the fact that the Lord Jesus masters the storms and the raging seas?

PRAYING WITH THE WORD

Loving God,

you formed the earth and the sea and you have dominion over the raging waters.

You spoke to Job “out of the storm” to assure him of your presence

and to assert your dominion over all.

Your Son Jesus Christ slept in the stern of the boat tossed by the raging sea.

His serenity in the midst of troubled waters

evokes Jonah’s “sleep of death” in the belly of a whale

and prefigures his own “sleep of death” in the womb of the earth,

shrouded with life-giving waters.

Help us to trust that, since you are in absolute control,

there is calm and order out of primeval chaos.

Help us to have faith in Jesus who is GOD like you.

When life-threatening storms buffet us,

help us to call on Jesus our Savior.

He is the powerful Lord who masters the winds and the raging seas.

May our faith be steadfast and strong.

May we hold on to you and to Jesus

as we journey through the turbulence of life.

May we praise you and Jesus in the midst of our life storms.

You live and reign forever and ever. Amen.
