17th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B

“God’s Abundance”

(+) In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

(A moment of silence)

SONG: Any suitable Eucharistic hymn or any appropriate song may be sung.

WORDS OF SAINT AUGUSTINE

Who is even now providing nourishment for the whole world if not the God who creates a field of wheat from a few seeds? Christ did what God does. Just as God multiplies a few seeds into a whole field of wheat, so Christ multiplied the five loaves in his hands. For there was power in the hands of Christ. Those five loaves were like seeds, not because they were cast on the earth but because they were multiplied by the one who made the earth. This miracle was presented to our senses in order to stimulate our minds; it was put before our eyes in order to engage our understanding, and so make us marvel at the God we do not see because of his works which we do see.

SILENT ADORATION

OPENING PRAYER

(Composed by Blessed James Alberione)

Leader: Jesus, Divine Master,

I thank and bless your most lovable Heart

for the great gift of the Holy Eucharist.

Your love makes you dwell in the holy tabernacle,

renew your passion in the Mass,

and give yourself as food for our souls in Holy Communion.

Assembly: May I know you, hidden God!

May I draw salutary waters from the font of your Heart.

Grant me the grace to visit you everyday in this sacrament,

to understand and actively participate in Holy Mass,

to receive Holy Communion often, with faith and love.

Part I

JESUS MASTER TRUTH

Listening to the Word

FIRST READING: 2 Kgs 4:42-44

RESPONSORIAL PSALM

GOSPEL READING: Jn 6:1-15

PERSONAL REFLECTION

(As a tool for personal reflection, please visit the PDDM Website: www.pddm.org // www.pddm.us for BREAKING THE BREAD OF THE WORD [Series 4, n. 36]: A Lectio Divina Approach to the Sunday Liturgy. The Biblico-Liturgical Reflections are an aid for a deeper understanding of the Gospel reading.)

SONG: Any Eucharistic hymn or suitable song of praise may be sung.

Part II

JESUS MASTER WAY

Confrontation with the Word

POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART

A.    What are the various hungers that afflict us personally and as a global community? How do we respond to the hungers of today’s world?

B.     How do we trust in the Lord’s promise, “They shall eat and there shall be some left over”? How do the Gospel episodes of the multiplication of the loaves impinge on us and inspire us to trust in the power of Jesus and in divine providence?

C.     Do we try to offer to God our “little lot” and trust in God’s power to transform our poverty into riches and abundance?

PRAYING WITH THE WORD

(Adapted from Pope John Paul II’s Prayer and from T.V.N., “Loaves and Fishes”)

Leader: We adore you, O wonderful Sacrament

of the presence of the One who loved his own “to the end”.

We thank you, O Lord,

who edifies, gathers together and gives life to the Church.

O divine Eucharist,

flame of Christ’s love that burns on the altar of the world,

make the Church, comforted by you,

even more caring in wiping away the tears of suffering

and in sustaining the efforts of all who yearn for justice and peace.

Assembly: Lord, I haven’t much to give you.

But I’ll give you all I’ve got.

You could make it work wonders,

bless and use my little lot.

Part III

JESUS LIFE

Acting upon the Word

PERSONAL PRAYER

CONTEMPLATING WITH MARY THE FACE OF CHRIST: The Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary may be prayed in part or in full.

THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION

Priest: We trust in the God who multiplies our “little lot” into an “abundant lot” and feeds the hungry and the poor. Let us renew our prayer to him and say:

(R.) BREAD OF SALVATION, BREAD FOR THE POOR, BE WITH US!

1.      May we offer compassionate acts of love, service and healing for today’s “broken body of Christ”, we pray: (R.)

2.      May we be imbued with great responsibility to feed the hungry, care for the poor and the sick, and assist the needy, we pray: (R.)

3.      May we respond to the hungers of today’s world with great love and solicitude, we pray: (R.)

4.      May we always be willing to offer Jesus the “few loaves of bread” that we have to alleviate the hungers of those who turn to God, we pray: (R.)

(Other prayers may be added.)

THE LORD’S PRAYER

CONCLUDING PRAYER

Leader: Almighty Father,

by our sharing in the Eucharistic mystery,

enliven us with your Spirit

and conform us to the image of your Son.

Keep your Church alert in faith to the signs of the times

and eager to accept the challenge of the Gospel.

Open our hearts to the needs of all humanity,

so that sharing their grief and anguish, their joy and hope,

we may faithfully bring them the good news of salvation

and advance together on the way to your kingdom.

You live and reign forever and ever.

Assembly: Amen.

FINAL SONG: Any suitable Eucharistic hymn or song of praise may be sung.
