INTRODUCTION

(Cf. Days of the Lord, vol. 5, p. 174)

The bread of the strong is given to us … The life of the Church and of the believers is an exodus, a time of trial, often a crossing of the wilderness. But God remains near those who do not despair of him, even when the burden that crushes them leads them to say, “It is enough, Lord.”

SILENT ADORATION

OPENING PRAYER

Leader: We adore you, O Christ the Divine Master,

present in the holy Eucharist to nourish and strengthen us.

You are the Bread of salvation - Bread for the poor,

the Food for the wayfarers.

You satisfy our inmost and deepest hungers,

and you sustain us in our spiritual journey

as “pilgrim” disciples in today’s world.

By the “bread of the strong” that you have given us,

help us to participate fully, actively and consciously in building a world

where human life is always cherished and defended,

every form of violence banished,

and the peace of all tenaciously sought.

We adore you, Lord Jesus, the Bread of life.

We worship you living among us in the sacrament of your body and blood,

now and forever.

Assembly: Amen.

Part II

JESUS MASTER WAY

Confrontation with the Word

POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART

A.    What dire situations are we experiencing in the present which make us cry out, just like the distressed Elijah, “It is enough, Lord”? Do we ever feel that death or oblivion is better than “living”? What do we do when we are pushed to the edge of despair?

B.     Do we trust that God cares and provides for those who love him? What are our experiences of God’s intervention in our life? Is the “Elijah event” ever replicated in our personal experience? Do we believe that the Lord God continues to work “miracles” in our life? Do we trust that God is our Savior and will continue to rescue us in our moments of sadness and distress?

C.     Do we believe that the Eucharist is the food that strengthens – the “angel’s food” to nourish us in our spiritual journey in the here and now? Do we endeavor to taste and see the goodness of the Lord in the Eucharist? Do we recognize that the greatest food for the journey is the person of Jesus Christ himself, of which the Eucharist is a limpid and intense sacrament?

PRAYING WITH THE WORD

(Cf. “O Esca Viatorum” – traditional)

O food of travelers, O bread of angels, O manna of the heavenly!

Nourish the hungry;

do not deprive of sweetness the hearts of those who seek you.

O lymph, font of love, which flows from the pure Heart of the Savior!

Quench the thirsty:

These alone are our vows; you are enough for them.

O Jesus, we adore your face hidden under the appearances of the veil,

we will see you in heaven, face to face.

Part III

JESUS LIFE

Acting upon the Word

PERSONAL PRAYER

CONTEMPLATING WITH MARY THE FACE OF CHRIST: The Mysteries of Light of the Rosary may be prayed in part or in full.

THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION

Priest: Christ invites all to the supper in which he strengthens us with food for our journey. Let us ask him,

(R.) O FOOD OF TRAVELERS, O FOOD OF ANGELS, STRENGTHEN US!

1.      We humbly present to you the Holy Father’s General Intention for the month of August: FOR CHRISTIAN ORPHANS: May they receive proper care as well as education in the faith. We pray:  (R.)

2.      We humbly present to you the Holy Father’s Mission Intention for the month of August: FOR ALL CHRISTIANS: May they be ever more aware of their calling to be missionaries in and out of season. We pray:  (R.)

3.      Help us to welcome the peace and blessings that the Eucharist brings. We pray: (R.)

4.      Help us to heed the challenge of our neighbors in need. We pray:  (R.)

5.      Nourish us daily with “the bread of the strong” and let us recommit ourselves, our energy, intelligence and creativity to working for social justice and peace. We pray: (R.)

6.      May we never be disheartened in our quest for a better and harmonious world. We pray: (R.)

(Other prayers may be added.)

THE LORD’S PRAYER

CONCLUDING PRAYER

Leader: God our Father,

look with favor on the offering of your Church

in which we show forth the paschal sacrifice of Christ.

Through the power of your Spirit of love

include us now and forever among the members of your Son,

whose body and blood we share.

May Christ be always our companion in our journey

and nourish us always with the food that strengthens,

the “bread of the strong”,

now and forever.

Assembly: Amen.

FINAL SONG: Any suitable Eucharistic hymn or song of praise may be sung.
