INTRODUCTION

(Cf. Demetrius Dumm’s reflection in Meditations on the Sunday Gospel, Year B, New York: New City Press, 1996, p. 76)

In John’s version of the call of the first disciples, we read that two of them were following Jesus. When he turned and saw them following him, he asked “What are you looking for?” They said, “Rabbi” (which means a teacher), “where are you staying?” “Come and see,” he replied. In view of John’s love for symbolism, it would be a mistake to see this simply as a friendly exchange. Rather, the question of Jesus implies that he perceives in them (and in us) that deep longing that is characteristic of humans when they follow themselves to be in touch with their true condition … The disciples call him “Rabbi” because they sense that if he knows their innermost yearning, he must also know where to find what they seek; he must be a teacher of truth. So they ask him, Where are you staying? They are certainly not asking for his address. Their question means, “Where can we find you and learn from you about our true home?” Jesus says in, Come and see. He does not give a pat answer; he offers instead an invitation to walk with him and to learn what living hope means, what the journey means – to learn of its pain but also of its joy, and most of all of its happy ending, its true homecoming.

SILENT ADORATION

OPENING PRAYER

Leader: Almighty and ever-present Father, your watchful care reaches from end to end and orders all things in such power that even the tensions and the tragedies of sin cannot frustrate your loving plans. Help us to embrace your will, give us the strength to follow your call, so that your truth may live in our hearts and reflect peace to those who believe in your love. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord.

Assembly: Amen.

JESUS MASTER TRUTH

Part II

JESUS MASTER WAY

Confrontation with the Word

POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART

Leader: We open our hearts to listen to the promptings of the living Word. Let us ask ourselves with limpid honesty:

1.      Are we ready to listen to the Word of God and respond to his call? Do we allow ourselves the time and the leisure for prayer and meditation on the Word of God?

2.      Are we ready to be instruments of God’s call for others and facilitate their response to him?

3.      How do we contribute personally and as a community to the vocational ministry in the Church?

PRAYER

(“Help Me To Choose the Narrow Road” by Henri Nouwen)

Leader: Dear Lord Jesus, I remain so torn and divided. I truly want to follow you, but I also want to follow my own desires and lend an ear to the voices that speak about prestige, success, human respect, pleasure, power, and influence. Help me to be attentive instead to your voice, the voice which calls me to choose the narrow road to life. The choice for your way has to be made every moment of my life. I have to choose thoughts that are your thoughts, words that are your words, and actions that are your actions. There are no times or places without choices. And I know how deeply I resist choosing you. Be with me every moment and in every place so that I may recognize your way and choose to walk it.

Assembly: Amen.

SONG: Any suitable song may be sung.

Part III

JESUS LIFE

Acting upon the Word

PERSONAL PRAYER

CONTEMPLATING WITH MARY THE FACE OF CHRIST: The Mysteries of Light of the Rosary may be prayed in part or in full.

THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION

(Adapted from Blessed Alberione’s “Vocational Offertory”)

Leader: Let us pray to God the Father who cares for all, and with earnest humility say:

(R.) LORD, SEND GOOD LABORERS INTO YOUR HARVEST.

1.      That everyone may understand the appeal of Jesus: “The harvest is great, but the laborers are few. Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest.”  (R.)

2.      That in every place a family, social and religious environment may be formed that is favorable to vocation development and response.  (R.)

3.      That parents, priests and educators, with their words and with material and spiritual help, may open the way for those called.  (R.)

4.      That Jesus Master, Way and Truth and Life, may be followed in the direction and formation of vocations.  (R.)

5.      That those who are called may become holy, and be the light of the world, the salt of the earth.  (R.)

6.      That in every person a deep vocational awareness may be formed: all Catholics with all the means, for all vocations and apostolates.  (R.)

(Other prayers may be added.)

THE LORD’S PRAYER

CONCLUDING PRAYER

Leader: God our Father, author of every vocation,

our refuge and strength,

hear the humble prayers of your Church

and grant that we may obtain the fullness of what we ask in faith.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, forever and ever.

Assembly: Amen.

FINAL SONG: Any suitable Eucharistic hymn or song of praise may be sung.
