INTRODUCTION
(by Cardinal Joseph Bernardin)
“Reform your lives and believe in the Gospel!” With these words Jesus began his public ministry. Once we have heard the good news, what is left to do but to pay for the price of it – to sell all to possess a pearl of such great worth? To respond means to change in mind and heart. It means faith and love. It means a new mind illumined by faith and a new heart inflamed by the love of Jesus Christ.
SILENT ADORATION
OPENING PRAYER
(Adapted from a prayer composed by Blessed Alberione)
Leader: Jesus, Divine Master, I thank and bless your most generous Heart for the great gift of the Gospel. You said: “I was sent to evangelize the poor.” Your words bring eternal life. In the Gospel, you revealed divine mysteries, taught the way of God in truth, offered the means of salvation.
Assembly: Grant me the grace to preserve your Gospel with veneration, listen to it and read it according to the spirit of the Church, and promote it with the love with which you preached it. May it be known, honored, and received by all! May the world conform its life, laws, morals, and teachings to it. May the fire brought by you upon the earth inflame, enlighten and warm everyone.
Part I
JESUS MASTER TRUTH
Listening to the Word
FIRST READING: Jon 3:1-5, 10
RESPONSORIAL PSALM
GOSPEL READING: Mk 1:14-20
PERSONAL REFLECTION
(As a tool for personal reflection, please visit the PDDM Website: www.pddm.org // www.pddm.us for BREAKING THE BREAD OF THE WORD [Series 4, n. 9]: A Lectio Divina Approach to the Sunday Liturgy. The Biblico-Liturgical Reflections are an aid for a deeper understanding of the Gospel reading.)
SONG: Any Eucharistic hymn or suitable song of praise may be sung.
Part II
JESUS MASTER WAY
Confrontation with the Word
POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART
Leader: We open our hearts to listen to the promptings of the living Word. Let us ask ourselves with limpid honesty:
1. What does the conversion experience of the Ninevites and the Christian disciples tell me? What are its implications?
2. How do I compare the prophetic task of Jonah with that of Christ? How do I assess my prophetic ministry in light of the work of Jonah and that of Christ?
3. How do I respond to the continual appeal for conversion and adherence to Christ, the incarnate Gospel, in our daily life? Is my conversion response to Christ total and irrevocable? How do I share the message of the Gospel with others? What help do extend to those who are especially dedicated to the ministry of evangelization in today’s world?
PRAYER
(“For All Who Preach the Gospel” by Henri Nouwen)
Leader: Dear Lord,
many people experience our era
as an apocalyptic time full of dangers and threats.
I pray now for all who witness for you in this time –
ministers, priests and bishops,
men and women who have dedicated their lives to you,
and all those who try to bring the light of the Gospel
into the darkness of this age.
Give them courage, strength, perseverance, and hope;
fill their hearts and minds with knowledge of your presence,
and let them experience your name as their refuge from all dangers.
Most of all, give them the joy of your Spirit,
so that wherever they go and whomever they meet
they will remove the veil of depression, fatalism and defeatism
and will bring new life to the many who live in fear.
Be with all who bring the Good News into this present darkness.
Assembly: Amen.
SONG: Any suitable song may be sung.
Part III
JESUS LIFE
Acting upon the Word
PERSONAL PRAYER
CONTEMPLATING WITH MARY THE FACE OF CHRIST: The Mysteries of Light of the Rosary may be prayed in part or in full.
THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION
Leader: Lord Jesus, you died on the cross in order to save us and you gave the Church the mission to preach the Gospel to all peoples. But many do not know you and believe in you, our only Savior. Stir up in the Church the zeal for the salvation of humankind. Inspire generous men and women who dedicate their life for the spread of the Gospel. We say:
(R.) LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER.
1. That all men and women be saved and come to the knowledge of truth.
2. That the Gospel be proclaimed to all.
3. That priests, religious and laity offer generously their contributions to the missions.
4. That the new churches in mission land grow continually and be witnesses to Christ.
5. That the Lord comfort, guide and help those who suffer for the spread of the Gospel.
(Other prayers may be added.)
THE LORD’S PRAYER
CONCLUDING PRAYER
Leader: God our Father,
you want all men and women to be saved
and come to the knowledge of truth.
Send workers into your harvest
and increase the number of fishers of men.
May they proclaim your Word with apostolic courage.
Let your Gospel spread and be received with honor.
May everyone come to know you, the one true God
and him whom you have sent, Jesus Christ your Son and our Lord.
Assembly: Amen.
FINAL SONG: Any suitable Eucharistic hymn or song of praise may be sung.
