INTRODUCTION

The season of Advent is pervaded by a mood of rejoicing. The Church’s liturgy highlights the joyful expectation of the Messiah who is sure to come.

In this Eucharistic adoration, we are invited to delve into the experience of this joy that emanates from within and to bring it to fullness in our words and actions. May our spiritual joy bear fruits of goodness for the people around us, especially those who are in extremely distressed situations.

SILENT ADORATION

OPENING PRAYER

Leader:  God of power and mercy,

open our hearts in welcome.

Remove the things that hinder us from receiving Christ with joy,

so that we may share his wisdom

and become one with him

when he comes in glory,

for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, forever and ever.

Assembly: Amen.

Part II

JESUS MASTER WAY

Confrontation with the Word

POINTS FOR THE EXAMINATION OF THE HEART

A.    What effect does the natural and man-made calamity create in us? Does it move us to despair or does it strengthen in us the resolve to trust in the Lord? Do we believe that the Lord, our God, is in our midst as a mighty Savior?

B.     Do I hear and recognize the ode to joy above the earth’s lamentation?  Do we trust that God will rejoice over us with gladness for he is a victorious warrior over all forms of sadness and misery? Do we rejoice in the reality that he is ever present to us and that he renews us in his love?

C.     Do we welcome with joyful expectation the advent of Jesus, the font of joy, in our personal life and in the life of the Church? Do we resolve to commit ourselves to be a people of joy and to be promoters of joy in today’s anguished and distressed world?

PRAYING WITH THE WORD

Assembly: I bless you, Lord,

because you have fulfilled

the promises you announced to the prophets.

I bless you, Holy Spirit, who descended upon Mary.

I bless you, divine Son,

who became incarnate to establish on the earth

the kingdom of truth, of holiness, and of grace.

I adore this mystery of power and love.

Behold salvation for all people.

Part III

JESUS LIFE

Acting upon the Word

PERSONAL PRAYER

CONTEMPLATING WITH MARY THE FACE OF CHRIST: The Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary may be prayed in part or in full.

THE WAY OF SOLIDARITY: PRAYER OF INTERCESSION

Priest: Advent is a time for trusting prayer and heartfelt invocation to God, the font of joy. Let us ask him to look kindly on us as we humbly present to him all our petitions, as we say/sing:

(R.) MARANATHA! COME O CHRIST, THE LORD!

1.      For the Holy Father’s General Intention for the month of December: FOR CHRISTIAN LEADERS OF NATIONS: May Christ, meek and humble of heart, inspire leaders of nations to exercise their authority wisely and responsibly. Let us pray/sing:  (R.)

2.      For the Holy Father’s Mission Intention for the month of December: FOR MISSIONARIES: May they live their vocation to follow Jesus with joy and enthusiasm. Let us pray/sing:  (R.)

3.      For those devastated by natural and man-made calamities, especially in the typhoon ravaged areas of the Philippines and Vietnam: May they experience the goodness of the Lord through the effective charity of people who are sensitive to their needs. Let us pray/sing:  (R.)

4.      For the sick and suffering: May they be touched by the healing power of God’s love and the care of the people who surround them. Let us pray/sing:  (R.)

5.      For the victims of violence, hatred and war: May their needless suffering cease and may they experience the joy of the Lord. Let us pray/sing:  (R.)

(Other prayers may be added.)

THE LORD’S PRAYER

CONCLUDING PRAYER

ever faithful to your promises

and ever close to your Church:

the earth rejoices in hope of the Savior’s coming

and looks forward with longing

to his return at the end of time.

Prepare our hearts and remove the sadness

that hinders us from feeling the joy and hope

which his presence will bestow.

He is Lord forever and ever.

Assembly: Amen.
